We are bringing the cows in for the winter on Monday 10th November. We're fortunate that autumn has not been too wet following the dry summer, as the grass has kept growing and the fields haven't become 'poached' by cows’ feet. If the ground gets too wet, the cows feet make holes in the field causing soil structural damage. Not only does this damage the fields, but it will also reduce the grass yield the following year as grass roots struggle with increased compaction, and reduced aeration in the soil structure following poaching.
On another note, Donald, our lovely Sussex bull we bought in the summer, has been doing well! A few weeks ago, the vet came out to scan our heifers we want to get in calf for their first time (called bulling heifers), and 33 cows that were not in calf. In his first eight weeks on the farm, he'd managed to get 22 of the 33 cows pregnant, and 11 out of 12 heifers: what a star! We'll be busy calving cows and heifers in May and June next year.
NEW: Beef Bone Broth
It's been highly requested for a while now, so we're excited to launch this new product! We've teamed up with Wild Alchemy (at Bates Green Farm, Arlington) to bring you this special beef bone broth. Made using the bones of only our own 100% grass-fed cows, our beef broth is a great source of collagen and amino acids, which aid joint and skin health. The inclusion of medicinal mushrooms (shiitake, chaga and reishi) adds a further range of health benefits, including supporting the immune system, reduced inflammation, antioxidants, and anti-aging properties. The remaining carefully selected ingredients come together to form a delicious umami flavour.Use as a base for soups, stews and sauces, and as a substitute for stock in recipes. And don't waste the fat cap: this healthy fat can be used with the rest of the broth, or as you would use any cooking fat.
Our broth comes in our reusable glass jars (425ml) and costs £9.00, available from our online shop. To add to your local doorstep delivery, contact our office on 01323 449494, or email sales@hookandson.co.uk.
